Vale on spot to curb County
Port Vale scored both of their goals from the penalty spot to earn a 2-1 victory over struggling Notts County who suffered their first defeat in four games.
Defences were on top during an uneventful first 24 minutes before Vale took the lead.
Andre Boucaud was adjudged to have handled and Jennison Myrie-Williams rolled a left-footed shot into the bottom left-hand corner of Bartosz Bialkowski's net as the County keeper dived in the opposite direction.
The visitors equalised two minutes before the end of a hard-fought but scrappy first-half when Ronan Murray fired his first league goal of the season.
Murray collected Callum McGregor's pass 20 yards out and struck a fierce left-foot shot which Vale keeper Sam Johnson got a hand to but could not prevent from entering the left corner of his net.
There were chances at both ends during a more open second half with County substitute Enoch Showumni skimming the crossbar with a shot before Tom Pope squandered a glorious chance for Vale.
But Vale won it in the 79th minute when Mustapha Dumbuya clipped Gavin Tomlin's heels before the Vale striker drilled his penalty to Bialkowski's right, with the ball striking the inside of the post on its way in.
