Vale somehow clutched a draw from the jaws of victory against Chesterfield in their first home game of the season.
For the first hour, Vale were dominant, playing the finest football their home supporters had seen in a long time.
But they only had a fragile lead, Marc Richards blasting home on 12 minutes. When Richards went off on 63 minutes, Vale seemed to run out of ideas.
It was inevitable after Vale had squandered so many chances that Chesterfield would equalise, which Dwayne Mattis duly did from close range on 79 minutes.
Vale's Stuart Tomlinson had to save Vale's blushes from a Drew Talbot shot late on. A late Chesterfield goal would have been daylight robbery.
